2023-2024 Welcome Back

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We want to welcome all LAD families and look forward to an amazing new school year 23-24! Welcome to our new students as you join the best community in the South Bronx, the Longwood Academy of Discovery!

There will be new routines, but we are all here to support each other. As we look into this new school year, our children will continue to need for us to advocate for them and encourage their learning jourbey. Longwood Academy of Discovery will be working closely with students, teachers, and families to support the NYC Reads initiative. Learning early literacy skills to be strong readers will be at the heart of LAD's learning mission.

We have a plan to support every student . We ask all parents to help us make sure your child is at school every day on time at 8:00am. We encourage every family to make sure your child reads at home every day. The school technology will be used to support our students and engage in learning, but we will also be working on making sure each child has decodable books/material and high interest books for them to read every day. We need our LAD Lions to read and visit places and learn new things through reading. There will be support services in school such as our WIN (What I Need) time that occurs from 8:13am - 8:43 am Monday through Friday. This is a time when students will engage in small group support to increase their mastery of early literacy skills for reading. Our schools MTSS team will continue to review students learning and create plans for those students who need additional support. Our partners Team First and New York edge will provide opportunities for extended learning time and enrichment in our after school programs.

It is extremely essential that your child attend school on time (8am) every single day. Attendance and punctuality is important for students learning as every minute counts. We know that it may be a little scary to come to school each day, but every staff member of LAD and especially me, are working hard so that Longwood Academy of Discovery is a welcoming, safe, learning community.

As a school we believe all students can “Learn, Achieve, Discover”. I look forward to continuing our work together in making The Longwood Academy of Discovery one of the best schools in the South Bronx.

 Warm Regards,

Principal Victoria Nájera

Let's Celebrate "Hispanic Heritage Month"

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

Join the LAD Community as we Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month on Friday, October 29, 2023 with our school wide assembly.
